Finding Paradise: Best Time to Visit The Maldives

The Maldives is an idyllic archipelago with over a thousand small islands that have a year-round warm climate, which makes deciding when to visit kind of problematic!

Here’s what you can expect each season, including weather, activities, and budget considerations:

High Season (November to April):

The high season is undoubtedly the most popular time to visit the Maldives. During these months, the weather is dry and sunny, with minimal rainfall and low humidity. The sea is calm and clear, making it the ideal place for snorkelling, diving, and other water based activities. However, high season also brings a surge in tourists, resulting in higher prices for accommodations and limited availability.

Shoulder Season (May and October):

The shoulder seasons of May and October offer a balance between favourable weather and fewer crowds. Although there might be occasional rain showers, these months still provide ample opportunities for outdoor activities. Hotel rates are generally more budget-friendly, making it a great option for savvy travellers. May is particularly attractive for dive enthusiasts as this is the manta ray season, offering a chance to witness these majestic creatures up close.

Monsoon Season (June to September):

The monsoon season brings rain and higher humidity to the Maldives. While this might not be the best time for sunbathing, it’s a great time for budget travellers to explore the Maldives. The underwater visibility might be reduced due to rain runoff, but marine life remains abundant. Keep in mind that some resorts may temporarily close during this period for maintenance.

Festivals and Cultural Events: To truly immerse yourself in the Maldivian culture, why not time your visit with one of the country’s vibrant festivals. The Maldives Independence Day on July 26th is celebrated with parades, cultural performances, and fireworks. The Maldives also observes Ramadan, which is a significant religious event, with traditions and activities that offer insight into the local way of life.

Overall, the Maldives is a year-round destination that offers something different each season. Whether you’re seeking incredible weather, budget-friendly options, or a unique cultural experience, there’s an ideal time to visit this tropical paradise. Just remember to consider your preferences and priorities when planning your Romantic Maldives getaway!

How to get to the Maldives

The collection of 26 atolls that make up the Maldives are located 700 kilometers from the Asian mainland in the Indian Ocean. So it’s fair to say that the Maldives are fairly isolated.

Getting to this remote destination requires a bit of planning, but that’s part of the Maldives charm, and the journey is well worth it!

International Flights to Male International Airport: The primary gateway to the Maldives is Velana International Airport on Hulhulé Island, near the capital city, Malé.

Numerous international airlines operate flights to this well-connected hub. Direct flights are available from major cities such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Singapore.

I highly recommend coming from Abu Dhabi if you’re that side of the world. Abu Dhabi airport has bed/sleep pods if you want to take a nap, as well as first-class shopping and dining options.

Kiwi is one of the best online flight booking platforms when searching for cheap airfares. Not only can you search an entire continent, but you can also select different destinations to find the lowest rates for the whole route.

Once you’ve landed in Malé, you’re only a seaplane or speedboat ride away from your chosen resort.

If you’re booking a resort near Male, the speedboat transfers will likely only be around $100-$200. However, seaplane transfers are usually expensive, costing up to $500+ per person!

Top tip: Dress conservatively when you explore Male, with shoulders covered and wearing slacks instead of shorts. Why? The first inhabitants of the Maldives arrived from India approximately 2,000 years ago. Gradually, Islam emerged as the predominant religion, resulting in a more conservative dress code and cultural norms within this idyllic destination.

Bringing alcohol into the country is prohibited, but it can be obtained within the tourist resorts. These resorts commonly provide all-inclusive packages that encompass alcohol, although I recommend avoiding excessive drinking. It’s also advisable to check the preferred attire for the beach at your resort, as certain locations might disapprove of bikinis. Although we found this to only be the case on the local resort islands we visited.

Seaplane Transfers:

Many luxury resorts in the Maldives are located on private islands. To reach these secluded paradises, you may need to take a seaplane transfer from Malé International Airport.

These scenic flights provide an incredible aerial view of the atolls and crystal-clear waters. Seaplane transfers are a unique part of the Maldives experience, offering stunning views en route to your resort.

Speedboat and Domestic Flights:

If your chosen resort is located closer to Malé, you could opt for a speedboat transfer instead of a seaplane.

For resorts situated on nearby islands, a speedboat ride is a convenient and efficient way to reach your destination. Additionally, there are domestic flights available to reach more distant islands, ensuring you can explore various corners of the Maldives.

Cruise Ships:

For those seeking an even more immersive experience, cruise ships and luxury yachts offer an alternative way to access the Maldives! Lots of cruise lines include the Maldives as part of their itineraries, allowing you to explore multiple islands and enjoy a mix of relaxation, romance and adventure.

Visa and Entry Requirements:

Most nationalities can obtain a free 30-day tourist visa upon arrival at Malé International Airport. Ensure your passport has at least six months’ validity from your intended departure date. Don’t forget to check the latest entry requirements before you travel to avoid any surprises.

Where to Stay in the Maldives for a Romantic Getaway?

#1 SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection By Hilton

For the first part of my Maldives Romantic Getaway, I spent a week at SAii Lagoon and I have to say that besides from Atlantis Paradise Island, this is the best hotel I have ever stayed at in my life! It was so good we reorganised our entire holiday to spend an extra few nights here! It honestly felt like a honeymoon destination.

SAii Lagoon is located within Emboodhoo Lagoon, which is only a 15-minute speedboat ride away from the airport. The convenience of this was actually the main reason we booked SAii Lagoon (I was worried that my luggage wouldn’t fit on a seaplane!)

The resort features an epic outdoor infinity pool with super comfy seats just about everywhere (since life is so strenuous at the resort), as well as a fitness centre and direct access to the Marina.

In terms of activities, SAii Lagoon offers amazing water-sports including diving and kayaking, which we spent hours doing one dreamy afternoon. Our kayak even had a glass floor, it was such an amazing experience and got to be one of the top things to do on the whole island 🤩!

We actually celebrated our anniversary at SAii Lagoon and the resort went out of their way to make it an extra special occasion. If you’re into couple photos, SAii Lagoon even gives you a gift voucher for a professional photo shoot upon arrival (regardless of whether you’re celebrating anything)! This has to be the most romantic Maldives resort ever!

The bedding at SAii Lagoon deserves a special mention. All guest rooms feature Creature comfort pillows and 300 thread count bed linens. I can confirm that this is the comfiest bed ever – even better than Premier Inn beds, which are pretty hard to beat!

One of my favourite features of SAii Lagoon is that you can order pretty much anything you want on the resort app – perfect for a lazy vacation day! But if you can be bothered to explore, I recommend hopping on a golf buggy and heading to the candy store then spend some quality time together pigging out!

Another thing that makes SAii Lagoon so special is that it has white-sand beaches, crystal clear waters and an incredible house reef – we saw lots of eagle rays, colourful fish and even some black tip sharks!

Dining options at SAii Lagoon are to die for, with a huge variety of in-house dining options to choose from, including Mediterranean seafood and Thai-inspired restaurants and a café. The Beach Club and Hard Rock Café are also just a few minutes walk from the resort and worth venturing to.

The most incredible buffet breakfast is put on every morning offering just about any type of breakfast you can possibly imagine.

God I miss this place!

#2 Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa Maldives

Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa is ideal for a Maldives Romantic Getaway, mainly because it’s an adult only resort offering super luxurious beach and over-water accommodation in the exclusive North Male Atoll.

By speedboat, it is a 15-minute journey from Male International Airport.

At Centara, you’ll find an ocean-front spa, a gym, and a very Instagrammable outdoor pool! The resort also has a PADI-certified dive centre, and can arrange for water activities like paddle-boarding and windsurfing.

But my top recommendation at Centara is hopping on a pedlo – within minutes of pedalling out we were surrounded by dolphins!

Although it’s not particularly romantic, one of the most fun things to do at Centara is attend shark feeding at 4pm. Top tip: Stop swimming around this time unless you fancy being a snack for the dozens of blacktip sharks that descend upon the resort every afternoon!

Besides 24-hour room service, there’s 6 on-site bars and restaurants serving Thai, Italian and International cuisines. We particularly loved the Italian food at the lovely La Brezza restaurant. Viu Bar is also the perfect place for date night, where you can unwind with a cocktail.

Finally, after a hard day, you can retreat to your gorgeous room, with each suite having epic views of the turquoise lagoon and all the modern amenities you could wish for.

Travel Hack: Booking accommodation online in advance is an essential part of your Maldives Romantic Getaway planning. To get the best deals, use Hotellook to find and compare prices!

What to Pack for Maldives Romantic Getaways

Packing for a romantic Maldives getaway involves a delicate balance between practicality and luxury. From lightweight clothing and sun protection essentials to swimwear and evening wear, careful planning ensures you’re well-prepared for all the romantic adventures that await!

Don’t forget to pack:

  • Lightweight Clothing: The Maldives boasts a tropical climate, so pack lightweight and breathable clothing. Think flowy sundresses, shorts, and T-shirts.
  • Swimwear Essentials: With crystal-clear waters at your doorstep, swimsuits are a must-pack item! Bring a variety of swimwear, from bikinis to one-pieces, and don’t forget a cover-up for when you’re off the beach.
  • Sun Protection: The Maldives basks in sunshine year-round, so pack high-quality sunscreen with a high SPF rating, ideally Reef Safe sunscreen. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a lightweight scarf or shawl for extra sun protection are also highly recommended.
  • Footwear: Opt for comfortable and versatile footwear such as flip-flops, sandals, and walking shoes for exploring your resort’s grounds and pristine beaches.
  • Beach and Adventure Gear: If you plan to snorkel, dive, or do any water sports, consider packing your own snorkel gear or water shoes. I also recommend packing a beach bag, beach towels, and a waterproof camera.
  • Evening Wear: Pack a few outfits suitable for romantic dinners and evening strolls. A sundress, a nice shirt and trousers, or a resort-chic outfit can add an extra touch of elegance to your evenings.
  • Health and Wellness Items: Don’t forget essentials like prescription medications, insect repellent, and any necessary travel-sized toiletries. A small first aid kit can also come in handy for minor cuts or scrapes.
  • Electronics and Chargers: Ensure your cameras, smartphones, and other electronics are packed, along with their chargers and an adapter.
  • Entertainment: Bring a good book to get lost in during downtime.
  • Romantic Gift: To take the romance even further you could pack a special gift for your better half. But, if you have no room in your suitcase, the luxury trip to the Maldives should suffice!
  • Forget Plastic Sim Cards, get an e-SIM: Stay connected with Airalo, which is an incredible app that gives you a variety of data packages to choose from to help make your Maldives Romantic Getaway as smooth as possible.

Maldives Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is vital on your Maldives Romantic Getaway. There are certain certain risk factors that make obtaining insurance particularly crucial in this tropical paradise, including its Remote Location, Water Activities and the risk of Natural Disasters.

Nomad Insurance with SafetyWing is ideal, as it covers emergency medical evacuation and bedside visits, starting at just $42 per 4 weeks.

You can use it as a subscription service, meaning you don’t have to pay for the whole year upfront. Instead, you’re charged every 28 days, until you cancel, giving you the ultimate level of flexibility. There’s also no limit on travel duration, so you don’t need a return date (and a return ticket) in order to activate your insurance.
